What Is Nano Fat Grafting?

Nanofat is a process in which fat extracted from the patient is micronized so as to loosen and separate regenerative cells and tissue that are then injected to target areas for various therapeutic benefits. It is typically injected from your own body and for transfer to other parts of the body to correct scars, wrinkles and other skin problems. Continue to learn:

How Nano Fat Grafting Works
Nanofat transfer takes place when fat is removed from other places on the body and transformed into a liquid. It is then applied to better skin texture and tone, smooth out lip lines, crows feet, tear troughs, and more. During this process, the patient gets rid of fat they’ve always wanted to see off, and will take on tiny bits of fat in their most refined state, right in the place they need them plus the ultimate accuracy!

Nanofat grafting technology relies on an abundance of growth factors that are mixed into your fat particles to encourage smoother and healthier skin. A growth factor is a naturally occurring substance that can stimulate cellular growth. The goal is to make aging go slower and grant a more effective means of removing scars, wrinkles, and other skin issues. Its prefix “nano” is a reference to the tiny particles of fat that the doctor uses for areas that have very defined contours, including the fine lines, wrinkles, temples, tear troughs, and dark circles around the eyes.

What Nanofat Can Be Used For

Nanofat grafting has a variety of uses. Studies have shown that the process is effective for correcting scars (1). It’s also proven effective in treating wrinkles and skin discolorations (2). Those suffering from hair loss might also benefit from nanofat grafting. In 2017, researchers found that the process can also treat androgenetic alopecia (3). During hair restoration, nanofat is combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and injected into the scalp.

The process has also been used to heal sexual problems in both men and women. A 2017 study revealed that stem cells acquired from nanofat can restore sufficient erectile function in men (4). For women, it has also been proven to alleviate symptoms of vulvar lichen sclerosus, a chronic inflammatory disease of the anogenital area that can lead to a decline in sexual function and quality of life (5).

The Benefits

Nanofat grafting is an excellent alternative to traditional methods like dermal fillers because it lasts longer by invigorating regenerative facial structures, like natural collagen production at a molecular level. There is also no risk of allergic reaction as one’s own fat is being used. There is also less bruising, discomfort, and swelling than traditional procedures, which makes the recovery process faster and easier. The enduring results of nanofat grafting are also because the body’s fat is biocompatible and accepted without problems.

What to Expect

A local anesthetic is applied to guarantee patient comfortability. Afterward, the doctor injects a small needle attached to a syringe into an area with an overabundance of fat like the buttocks, abdomen, or flanks. Once the doctor takes out the fat, it goes for a spin in a centrifuge to separate the fat from other fluids. Next, the fat is micronized to nanofat using any one of several devices for nanofat processing. These nanofats contain regenerative cell components that include stromal vascular fraction along with other tissues. Next, the doctor injects the nanofat into areas of the desired function.

Nanofat is not meant to recontour the body or facial structures. Therefore if the doctor wants to change the structure (recontour) of the face by imparting volume, structural fat which is fat that has not been processed into nanofat is used for this effect. Nanofat is used for its cell and non-cell functional regenerative and healing properties. Sometimes the doctor may choose to enhance the nanofat with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cells for an enhanced effect. The doctor implements said serum to improve the overlying skin’s texture and appearance. The results are evident within days, but change becomes obvious at six weeks with improvements continuing into the sixth month.
